Courses can vary for new Forklift Truck operators but generally follow a structured format of skills to be learned and knowledge to be gained before they can be signed off to use a Forklift Truck safely on site.
Pre-Use Inspection Checks
Before getting on the machine, the pre-use inspection for a forklift is listed out on a sheet, which includes things such as the tires, forks, mast chains, fluids, horn, lights, and seat. The purpose of going through this list is to ensure that any damage or wear is found before it can cause any problems while in operation.
Operator Controls and Instruments
Trainees learn to operate the Forklift including how to use operator controls and how to read instruments. They learn what each instrument reading means and when a reading may need to stop the forklift from operating.
Load Handling and Stability
Using the correct sequence of movements when picking up a pallet such as approaching the stack in a square formation, with the forks in the correct position, tilting the fork back before lifting the fork up and then travelling slowly with the load low down to the floor. Safe Travel and Site Rules
Speed limits, single way systems, pedestrian crossing points and the use of horns at blind corners are all covered within the syllabus. Working in Confined Spaces
When training in a narrow aisle warehouse the learner will understand the aisle width, turning radius and use of mirrors when operating in confined spaces. They will be able to share the area with other vehicles and pedestrians, travelling at slow speed when necessary.
Emergency Procedures
When a forklift truck overturns, operators are taught to stay in the cab, to brace themselves against the inside of the cab where possible, and not jump out of the cab. A load that is shifting whilst travelling is to be stopped, lowered to the ground and then the situation reassessed.
New operators complete the training by completing all areas of the forklift course in a set order and completing the necessary sign-off by the trainer for them to use a forklift in a work place.
